VARIATIONS IN FREDERICK
Join Trio La Milpa in Frederick, Maryland on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 3pm. The concert will feature a set of Variations written by Ludwig van Beethoven and American composer Bruce Yurko. Yurko's Variations was composed in 2009 in honor of the trio's appearance at the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance. The concert will also feature a performance of the trio's signature 'Bartok's 9 Old Dance Tunes'. The concert, held at All Saints Episcopal Church, is sponsored by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNER OF THE 2010 PEABODY INSTITUTE/TRIO LA MILPA COMPOSITION COMPETITION - VIET CUONG
Viet Cuong (b. 1990) is a second-year student attending the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, studying music composition with composer Kevin Puts. To date, Viet has composed works for a variety of small ensembles, as well larger pieces for wind band. Several of these compositions have been performed at various venues, ranging from fundraiser and volunteer events to large outdoor amphitheatre concerts. In recent news, his “show-stealing clarinet solo piece” (Brett McCabe, Baltimore City Paper), Zanelle, was premiered on December 2nd, 2009 by Miles Jaques, and his wind band work, Ziggurat, received a world premiere by the Peabody Wind Ensemble on April 14th, 2010 under the direction of Dr. Harlan Parker. Ziggurat was one of three pieces selected for the National Band Association’s 2010 Young Composer Mentor Project, and the Prairie Wind Ensemble will perform the piece on June 21st, 2010. During the project, Viet will also participate in master classes and lessons with Mark Camphouse, Thomas Duffy, and Joseph Turrin. In the summer of 2010, he will study composition with Sydney Hodkinson at the Aspen Music Festival and School with a Susan and Ford Schumann scholarship.
